Vadose Zone Transport Studies

Vadose Zone Transport Field Studies

The U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) through its Hanford Science and Technology (S&T) Initiative has funded research to reduce uncertainties associated with vadose zone transport processes beneath waste sites at DOE's Hanford Site. The VZTFS is an S&T activity with an objective of providing a systematic set of field tests to assess contaminant plume migration in the Hanford Vadose zone. A second objective is to assess advanced characterization tools for vadose-zone plume detection with emphasis on minimally- intrusive geophysical tools and those that take advantage of the existing infrastructure of steel-cased wells using tomography and related methods.
